John Andrew Candy, Dakota

Dakota, Ill. March 24 -- John Andrew Candy, lifelong resident of Dakota, passed away early this morning at a Freeport hospital, after a week’s illness.

He was the son of Levi and Catherine Candy and was born Jan. 18, 1850, in Snydertown, Centre county, Pa. He came to Dakota township in 1864. He was married Oct. 3, 1881, to Catherine Gochnaur, who passed away in 1918. To this union three children were born, two of whom survive. They are Mrs. Nellie Mitchell, of Dakota, and Walter, of Milwaukee. One son, Frank, passed away in 1931. Six grandchildren survive, also a sister, Mrs. Sarah Swartz, Cleveland, Tenn. A sister, Mrs. Maria Long, preceded her brother in death several years ago.

In 1908 Mr. Candy retired from farming and moved to Dakota. During his residence in the village he has been the president of the board of trustees.

Private funeral services will be held from the home of C.V. Smith Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. A public service will be held at 2:00 o’clock at the Dakota Community church. Rev. Edward Fehr, of Rock Grove, will officiate. Interment will be made in Dakota cemetery.

Friends may view the body of Mr. Candy at the home of C.V. Smith after 6 o’clock Tuesday evening.
